Healthy Aging Initiative
The Healthy Aging Regional Collaborative is a five-year program launched in 2008 with $7 million in Foundation funding. The initiative’s vision for this program was to enable large proportions of older adults to participate in low-cost, evidence- based health promotion programs and enjoy the resulting benefits of better health, well-being and independence. That vision has become a clear success.
The nationally recognized Collaborative has enabled more than 17,000 older adults in 160 different locations across South Florida to stay healthy and independent through its various classes and programs.
The health promotion programs, which were offered throughout the country but not in South Florida until 2008, are endorsed by the CDC, the National Council on Aging, the Healthy Aging Research Network and the US Administration on Aging. The programs address what researchers have concluded to be the top threats to healthy aging: 1) sedentary lifestyle, 2) chronic illness, e.g., diabetes and arthritis, 3) injuries from falls, and 4) depression.
